Preparing for September: What Schools Are Focusing On Right Now

This part of the year always seems to come around quickly. One minute, it’s early in the summer term, and the next, you’re already thinking ahead to September and everything that needs to fall into place before the new school year begins.

Schools will have been through this cycle many times before. There’s a rhythm to it, you know what’s coming, what needs ordering, what needs updating, and people know what their roles are in that, but even with that experience, there are always a few areas that can creep up or become more time‑pressured than they need to be.

Getting the basics sorted early

One of the biggest differences we see between schools that feel organised in September and those that feel a bit stretched is simply timing.

The things that are needed every year don’t change:

  • Exercise books
  • Classroom materials
  • Signage around the school
  • Materials for new starters

They’re not complicated, but they can easily turn into last‑minute jobs if left too late.

We’ve been working with a number of schools recently on getting these in place earlier, to take that pressure off later in the term.

It’s not about changing what you do, just about making it feel more straightforward when everything else ramps up.

Consistency matters more than it seems

Another thing that often comes up is consistency.

Exercise books are a good example. Some schools prefer standard formats, others choose to customise them. There isn’t a right or wrong approach; it depends on what works for you.

But where schools do see the benefit is in having everything aligned from the start of the term:

  • consistent formats across year groups
  • clear structure for staff
  • a more organised feel from day one

Small things, but they add up quickly in how the school runs day to day.

Simple fundraising ideas that are easy to roll out

Alongside the essentials, there’s always the ongoing challenge of fundraising - there are often initiatives like school fayres, non-uniform days, and other community-led fundraising.

What we’re seeing at the moment is less focus on large, complex initiatives and more interest in simple ideas that are easy to organise and deliver.

Things like branded water bottles are a good example. Straightforward to implement, useful for pupils, and capable of generating a small but meaningful return without adding workload.

It’s not about replacing existing activity, just adding something that works in the background.

Reducing last‑minute pressure

If there’s a common theme across everything, it’s this:

Most of the stress doesn’t come from the work itself; it comes from having to pull things together quickly.

Whether it’s a delivery arriving late, materials not quite matching or something being ordered at the last minute, they're the things that tend to make September feel more difficult than it needs to be.

Getting a few of the core elements sorted earlier can make a noticeable difference.
